NAD+ | What it is and why you should care
As with many of my blog posts, it all started when I listened to a podcast. Seriously, I am the target listener for some of these health / wellness focused podcasts because I WILL dedicate too much time learning about certain modalities, workouts, diets and bio-hacks. And when Dave Asprey wears army pants and flip flops, you can guess what I’m adding to my wardrobe.
Just kidding, I’m not that hard core.
But I do trust his credibility, and likewise, the credibility of many of his guests on Bulletproof Radio. When I heard his interview with Dr. Charles Brenner, in which they discussed the anti-aging effects of a certain coenzyme called NAD+, I knew this was something I had to look into.
To be fair, I’m only 26. Some of you may scoff at my desire to learn more about anti-aging, but I’m interested for two reasons: 1) selfishly, yes I’d like to slow down my aging as much as possible - why not start early? And 2) we love introducing things like this to our readers. It makes my day if even ONE of you benefits from what we put out there.
As fate would have it, I had been in communication with an IV facility called Chicago IV Solution. They told me they had recently started offering NAD+ infusions for their patients and would like for me to come in and try it.
Like you, I had many questions, so I did some more research and here is what I found:
NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is a vital coenzyme that is present in all living cells in our bodies and is necessary for over 1,000 metabolic and cell functions.
It is the key to DNA health, brain function, and healthy aging.
It is known to be effective for wellness and anti-aging, as well as brain and mood health.
Many say that it makes them feel fresh, energetic, and more focused.
NAD+ is said to improve sleep because it regulates circadian rhythms.
It increases cardio endurance and athleticism.
Let’s get more specific about this anti-aging thing:
Have you ever heard of sirtuins? It’s okay if not, it was a new term for me too. Sirtuins are a type of protein in the body that are responsible for regulating cellular processes - like the aging and death of cells. These proteins are vital to keeping cells, DNA and mitochondria healthy, and in turn are vital to longevity. When there is plenty of NAD+ in your cells, the sirtuins are happy and working hard to fight the aging process.
Here’s the kicker: our bodies lose about 50% of NAD+ between ages 20 and 50, and since NAD+ is the key activator of the sirtuins, we see the consequences of aging and mitochondrial death and worsening DNA and telomere health. The sirtuins are dependent on NAD+ for their activity and levels.
So how do we boost NAD+ in our bodies? There are a few different methods (as always, please consult your physician before trying any of these treatments):
Take NAD+ supplements.
Follow a high-fat, low-carb keto diet.
Practice intermittent fasting.
But if you want to see immediate results, you could get an NAD+ infusion. This customized therapy is available in IV Solution’s private, confidential setting with anesthesiologists, registered nurses, and skilled staff onsite. NAD+ infusion treatments are tailored to the needs of the patient: Anxiety/Depression, Anti-Aging and Brain-Booster. The effects of NAD+ may last from 2-4 weeks. Within two months of an infusion, patients experience an increase in measured NAD+ levels. However, immediate effects of the solution include an increase in focus, energy, mood, memory, endurance and improved sleep.
The IV infusion took about 2.5 hours to complete, which was a bummer, but I passed the time listening to podcasts and reading my book. If you’ve never had an IV before (I hadn’t!), don’t be scared. It was super easy and didn’t hurt. As Dr. Bal warned, the side effects during the infusion were a little uncomfortable - slight headache, minor stomach bloat - but they dissipated as soon as the IV was taken out.
As soon as it was over, I felt great - super energized and really clear-headed. And that night, I slept like a baby, which, if you ask my husband, is near impossible these days thanks to our dog. Since the infusion, it’s been difficult to notice any major changes (there are SO many other variables in my life that affect my mood, energy, etc. But I can say that I haven’t felt “off” lately. My stress levels are way lower than before, I feel really great upon waking, and my sleep has definitely improved.
