FitCityFamily Features: Jenny Perlongo of Soiree Tea
Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself. Who is Jenny?
A: I’m Jenny. Founder of Soiree Tea. I founded Soirée Tea, with the hopes of providing deliciously fun and modern flavors of loose leaf tea.
Q: What was the inspiration behind Soiree Tea?
A: The name soirée means party and I’m sure we have all had our fair share of tea parTEAs in our younger days. I can’t remember when I first started loving tea but I do remember when I switched to loose leaf and the difference was enough for me to start a company so I could share it with you!
I’m also very passionate about the health benefits of tea. After losing my dad to cancer, I became very involved in alternative medicine and living a clean life. Upon doing so, I discovered the cancer fighting benefits of tea as well as many other health benefits.
Originally from Janesville Wisconsin, I now live in Chicago with my husband, 2 boys, and dog Lucy. As a #mompreneur I want to make sure I’m always giving back, so a portion of our proceeds goes directly to cancer research.
Q: What do you love most about your job?
A: Well right now I have 2 jobs (Soiree is so new that I can't quite quit my day job...yet!) but what I love most about Soirèe is when people tell me what they think of the TEA! I have had so many people tell me they weren't huge tea drinkers or only used bagged tea and now they are so happy to be drinking less coffee and loving the quality and taste of the flavors I have created!
Q: Take us through a day in the life!
A: Well I have 2 boys (age 4 and 5.5) so I usually get them off to school. Hit a class at 8:30 (sometimes 6am if I can swing it). Then head to work (day job) and pick up kids from school. After they go to bed I work on Soiree until I can't keep my eyes open. I have a lot going on but I love that Soirèe is my passion project. I love tea and the flavors I have created are something I'm very proud of and am getting great positive feedback on.
Q: What's your favorite way to stay active?
A: I love taking ALL the classes in Chicago. My favorites are Chi50, Studio Lagree, Studio three, Solid Core and Zen yoga garage! I live closest to Bucktown but I love exploring new classes all over the city. I think it is so motivating to get to know your instructors so they know you when you walk in and it is like seeing a friend every time you show up!
Q: What do you love most about YOUR #FitCityFamily (aka the health and wellness community in Chicago that you interact with!)
A: I love the community aspect of supporting these small businesses/fitness studios. It can be a bit boring to go to a gym and work out, you don't end up interacting with anyone and it is easy to make an excuse not to go or not to push yourself. When you sign up for a class everyone in the room is in it together and has a passion for the workout they are doing. Also, I have been a fitness person my whole life. I swam competitively for 13 years including college. But the changes I saw in my body when I started taking classes at these fitness studios (mostly Lagree method) are so incredible I tell everyone I know they should try it!
