Our featured guests all share our passion for health, fitness, acceptance and affinity for building community. They are movers, shakers, & inspirers. And we think you should know who they are!
First up is our friend Daryn Schwartz, founder and CEO of The Space Between Yoga, Chicago’s newest yoga studio. She’s living out her dream of opening a yoga studio, but we’ll let her dish on all the details…
Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself. Who is Daryn Schwartz?
A: Ooohhh tough question! I feel like I am so many things - I am a Southerner at heart but love the big city life. I am a lover, a connector and a big belly-laugher. I'd like to think I am funny, but you'll have to ask my friends if that's true. I was raised by the most amazing family around and am lucky to have the greatest chosen family (group of friends) I know. I am a yogi, a sweaty dance-party enthusiast, an early bird, a big ole nerd and I am always hungry!
Q: What was the inspiration behind The Space Between?
A: After 15 years in the 9-5 world, I had built a great career, but I knew that the profession I was in was not what I was meant to be doing with my life. I knew I needed to find what made my heart race and do that. I was in Savasana in a yoga class a little over two years ago when the idea for a super soulful yoga studio that offered meaningful movement, killer music and an elevated experience washed over me. I started working on a business plan and fast forward to a few months later, my job was eliminated and I knew the universe was telling me fly - telling me to do my thing! I was on a mission to create a yoga experience that inspires people to choose their life, to stand at the helm of their destiny, to come alive and fell at home within themselves. After two hard, but rewarding years, a few tears (okay, maybe more than a few) and lots of joyus moments, here we are!
Q: What do you love most about your job?
A: That I get to choose it. That I get to design what my job looks like. This job is WAY harder than any job I have ever had, but it's far more rewarding. I also love that I get to offer something to people that will help them live their best lives. Lastly, the connections I get to make and be a part of through this 'job', light me up in a major way!
Q: Take us through a day in the life!
A: I am still learning what this new day in the life looks like, but right now it's a 4am alarm clock, a hustle to get out of the house with a belly full of food and bulletproof coffee, open up the studio, get to know our new students, take out the trash, do the laundry (I am so lucky to have the CMO - the Chief Mom Officer - helping with that), try and figure out all the nuances of owning a yoga studio, communicate with our awesome teacher and studio staff family, work on marketing, social media, clean mats, mop the floor, get home around 9, eat something in a zombie-like state, try and get to all the emails and finally, go to bed far later than my preferred bedtime. I don't think it will always be this insane but I do think it will be a lot of very long days. I am eager to get back into a routine of working out and eating healthy! Open to any and all tips for on-the-go, plant-based meals!
Q: What's your favorite way to stay active?
A: Yoga!! but that's an obvious one. In addition to that, I love pilates at Chi50 and barre at FlyBarre. I want to get back into a serious strength training routine as well. Until I can spend time away from the studio, I think I am going to do strength workouts from the SweatWorkingApp! I have a whole yoga studio to use - why not?!?!
Q: What do you love most about YOUR #FitCityFamily (aka the health and wellness community in Chicago that you interact with!)
A: As a Southerner, I love that it makes a big city feel like a small town. I love going to studios & fitness events and seeing familiar and friendly faces. I also love that the fitness scene has become a social scene. As I've gotten older, the hangovers come much more easily, so I love sweating with with my friends while working out vs. sweating through a hangover after a night of drinking with them!
We couldn’t agree more. We’ll take an early morning sweat sesh + coffee/tea with friends over a late night + vodka sodas with randos at the bar ANY day!
