Flashback to one year ago (literally to the week). It was a winter day at the office, Chicago was dreary and cold, and I. Was. Miserable. I was working a job that I knew wasn't right for me. I was coming off the holidays with a little more puffiness than I would have liked. And I was desperately trying to think of ways to fulfill my 2017 resolution of "finding my purpose in life." Lofty goal, I know.
It's safe to say Kelly LeVeque changed my life that day. Obviously not motivated to do any kind of real work, I began googling wellness podcasts. I stumbled upon the Almost30 Podcast and the description of a certain episode caught my eye:
"Put on your robe, whisk some matcha tea and get your notebook ready. Kelly LeVeque of Be Well By Kelly, Celeb Holistic Nutritionist, author, and overall bad-ass entrepreneur joins the girls this week for an in-depth discussion about all things nutrition."
Click. Listen. Frantically scribble notes. Replay. I was hooked. Kelly's deep understanding of nutrition and wellness was impressive. While the discussion was extremely scientific (in Kelly style), it was easy to understand and honestly, something I was craving. I was sick of reading wellness blogs and listening to people with differing opinions on the "perfect diet," something I now know does not exist. But Kelly approached it differently. She provided us with science-backed facts on nutrition and wellness AND the healthy tools to achieve it. It seemed like a slap in the face to finally realize that what we put into our bodies affects EVERYTHING else in our lives. Kelly's way of describing nutrition just made sense to me.
I wanted more. I wanted to be consumed by this information. At this point, I was just started to dip my toes into the waters of my life's purpose. So I started doing more research, bought her book (linked and pictured below) when it came out, and eventually signed up for courses to become a health coach. While I have always been passionate about wellness and nutrition, Kelly sparked the idea that I could do something with my passion. I could take action and begin sharing some of this important knowledge with others.
If you are unfamiliar with her brand, Kelly introduced the idea of the "Fab Four" (Protein, Fat, Fiber & Greens), a powerful combination that turns off hunger hormones, fights inflammation, and is full of essential nutrients. Protein provides your body with collagen, builds muscle tone, and boosts metabolism; healthy fats benefit hormones, skin, and provide health at the cellular level, fiber promotes gut detoxification; and greens are full of phytonutrients, helping to fight cancer and inflammation. When each meal includes the Fab Four, your blood sugar will balance out, you will eat to satiety instead of filling your body with empty calories, and you're able to stay full longer.
Kelly's #FabFourSmoothie was the best addition to my diet since water. Seriously, I don't go more than 2 days without one if I can help it. I typically use some sort of combination of the following ingredients in my morning smoothies :
Protein (minimum 20g): hemp hearts, chia seeds, or clean protein powder. I prefer organic pea protein, collagen, or bone broth. For those who are not sensitive to dairy, organic whey protein is another good option.
Fat (1 tbsp): avocado, nut butter, coconut oil, walnuts, MCT oil
Fiber (minimum 10g): avocado, chia seeds, flax seeds
Greens (large handful): spinach, kale, basil, parsley, arugula, cucumber, cilantro, the list goes on...
GO-TO SMOOTHIE RECIPE:
1/4 frozen avocado
1 large handful of spinach
1 tsp chaga
1 tbsp ground flax
1 scoop Ancient Nutrition Organic Bone Broth Protein | French Vanilla (click here and use code FITCITYBLONDE for 20% off!)
Blend it up and top with any combination of the following superfoods:
